Town Hall Meeting
January 21 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
All Brookwood members and attendees are invited to a Town Hall discussion on Sunday, January 21 at 12 pm in the auditorium of Shakopee West Junior High School to discuss a recommendation from the Board of Elders regarding a possible merger with Turning Point Church in Chaska.
Recently, the leaders of Turning Point Church in Chaska approached Brookwood’s leaders to discuss the possibility of merging our two congregations. These two congregations are very similar. We are both church plants in the first decade of our existence. Neither of us owns our own building yet. We are part of the same CCCC denomination. Our theology, values, and strategies closely align. We have also worked together in the past on several projects. Could it be that our two churches should work together instead of separately? That’s the question that we began to ask.
The point of considering a merger is–purely and simply–to be better together. We are both helping people follow Jesus. We have the same dream of reaching many people who are separated from God with the Good News about Jesus. We have complementary strengths and systems, and by combining our resources, we can reach more people more quickly. That’s the best reason to consider a merger.
Turning Point Church in Chaska consists of approximately 120 people. They are considering bringing their people to Shakopee to worship with us in our current location. We have identical dreams about a future home for our two churches. This will in no way deter us from our ongoing capital campaign. In fact, we may soon have more people to join us in giving toward a future home for our church.
The leaders of our two churches have begun talking and learning together what it might look to have a successful merger. The Board of Elders is not prepared at this time to make a final recommendation to the congregation regarding this merger. However, we plan by January 21 to have a definitive recommendation to share with the congregation. At that time, if our recommendation seems to be positive, we will share as many details as we can about what a merger might look like. We will answer as many questions as we can and listen to as many suggestions as you would like to share.
On Sunday, January 28 we will hold a second Town Hall meeting at noon in the auditorium at Shakopee West Junior High School. We will answer more questions, continue to listen to feedback, and include anyone who could not attend the meeting on January 21.
Our hope is to bring a formal motion to the congregation at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 25. If the Board of Elders brings a motion to the congregation, the church will make the final decision together. Please make this year’s Annual Meeting a priority.
God seems to be blessing and pushing our church in new and exciting directions. We want to consider this opportunity for one and only one reason: this could help us to make even more followers for Jesus. Please pray for this process and ask that God will guide us in right directions and make us even more effective for his glory.
